Don't give your dog a hot foot

Summer temperatures are already way past warm and will get higher before the season ends. An air temperature of 77°F is rather pleasant, but the asphalt underfoot is 125°F. That is hot enough to burn paws and destroy skin in 60 seconds. An air temperature of 86°F still seems rather comfortable, but the asphalt your dog is walking on is 135°F. You can fry an egg on the pavement in 5 minutes at 131°F.

Press the back of your hand against the surface for seven seconds. Asphalt, concrete or sand that is too hot for your hand, is too hot for your dog's paws.

Why dogs sniff butts

It is normal for dogs to greet each other by sniffing butts. The snuffle is more than a doggie hello. They are gathering social information about each other from chemicals called pheromones given off by their sweat glands.

A dog can sniff pheromones on another dog's butt and determine the sex, health, age, mood of the individual, whether a female is in estrus (heat) or pregnant, and no doubt much more.

It is embarrassing to meet a dog that greets you by sniffing your private parts, but it shouldn't be so surprising. You will know that they are just reading your pheromone signature. Marvel at what amazing messages they may be interpreting from your chemical autograph.
